The goat was sacred long before it was satanic. In the oldest beliefs of Indo-European religion it belongs to guiding, pastoral gods, Pan, the two goats that pull Thor’s chariot, and to the she-goats who nurse the gods themselves. The goat-headed Devil/Baphomet is a late invention: After the spread of Christianity, it seems like goats took on a malevolent connotation in order to portray pagan religions as “evil” and “demonic”, the Church’s habit of demonizing horned pagan figures did the rest.
But in this house Goats have a special place on the Altar and in particular an honourary depiction of our beloved Black Phillip! 🖤
Goats are a potent symbol of independence, playfullness, stubbornness, abundance, cleverness, vitality and the courage to take the difficult path. They are sure-footed creatures that thrive in rugged terrain, which makes them natural symbols of resilience and determination.
Spiritually, the goat reminds us that the path upward is not always smooth. Sometimes success requires patience, balance, stubbornness, careful footing, and the willingness to keep climbing even when the mountain looks impossible from below.
